Should children and babies wear sunglasses? Babies’ and children’s eyes must be especially protected from harmful sunlight on hot, sunny summer days, as their protective ability is low: a child’s pupil is wide, the lens crystal clear, and they tend to look upwards more than adults. Children have a higher risk of eye damage caused by excessive sun exposure.
Do regular dark lenses also protect children’s and babies’ eyes? Eye protection from sunlight is provided not by dark lenses but by UV protection. Wearing sunglasses with simply dark tinted lenses but no UV protection is extremely dangerous for the eyes because natural defense mechanisms—squinting and pupil contraction—do not activate under dark lenses. As a result, much more UV radiation enters the eye than if not wearing sunglasses at all.
