Should children and babies wear sunglasses? Babies’ and children’s eyes should be especially well protected from harmful sun rays on hot, sunny summer days, because their eyes have low natural protection: a child’s pupils are wide, the lens is crystal clear, and in addition, they look upwards more than adults. Children have a higher risk of eye damage caused by excessive sun exposure.
Do ordinary dark lenses also protect children’s and babies’ eyes? What protects eyes from sunlight is not dark lenses but UV protection. Wearing sunglasses with dark tinted lenses without UV protection is extremely dangerous for the eyes, because the natural defense mechanisms of the eye—squinting and pupil constriction—do not work with dark lenses. As a result, significantly more UV radiation enters the eyes than if no sunglasses are worn at all.
