Should children and babies wear sunglasses? Babies and children’s eyes require special protection from harmful sunlight on hot, sunny summer days, because their eyes’ protective abilities are low: the child’s pupil is wide, the lens is crystal clear, and they tend to look upwards more than adults. Children are at greater risk of eye damage from excessive sun exposure.
Do regular dark lenses also protect children’s and babies’ eyes? It is not the darkness of the lens that protects eyes from sunlight, but the UV protection. Wearing sunglasses with dark lenses but no UV protection is extremely dangerous, as the eye’s natural defense mechanisms—squinting and pupil constriction—do not activate. As a result, much more UV radiation enters the eye than if no sunglasses were worn at all.
