Should babies wear sunglasses?
Babies’ and children’s eyes should be especially protected from harmful sunrays on hot, sunny summer days, as their eye protection capacity is low: a child’s pupils are wide, the lens is crystal clear, and, moreover, children tend to look upwards more than adults. Children are at greater risk for sun-induced eye damage.
Do dark lenses protect babies’ eyes?
It is not darkness but UV protection that shields the eyes from sunlight. Wearing sunglasses with just tinted, non-UV-protective lenses is extremely dangerous for the eyes because the eye’s natural defence mechanisms—squinting and pupil contraction—do not activate with dark lenses. Therefore, more UV rays can reach the eye than when not wearing sunglasses at all.
