Should babies wear sunglasses? Babies’ and children’s eyes need especially careful protection from harmful sunlight on hot, sunny summer days, as their eyes’ natural defense is low: a child’s pupil is wide, the lens is crystal clear, and, in addition, they tend to look upward more than adults. Children are at greater risk of eye damage caused by excessive sunlight.
Do ordinary dark lenses also protect babies’ eyes? Eyes are protected from sunlight not by dark lenses, but by UV protection. Wearing sunglasses with simply dark-tinted lenses, without UV protection, is extremely dangerous to the eyes, as the natural protective functions of the eye—squinting and pupil constriction—do not activate with dark lenses. This allows much more UV radiation to enter the eye than without sunglasses.
