Should a baby wear sunglasses?
The eyes of babies and children must be protected particularly carefully from harmful sun radiation on a hot sunny summer day because their eyes’ protective ability is low: a child’s pupil is wide, the lens crystal clear, and moreover, they look upwards more than adults. Children are at greater risk of eye damage caused by excessive sun exposure.
Does an ordinary dark lens also protect a baby’s eyes?
It is not dark lenses that protect against sun radiation, but UV protection. Wearing glasses with simply dark-tinted lenses without UV protection is extremely dangerous for the eyes, because the eyes’ natural protective functions: squinting and pupil constriction, do not activate with dark lenses. Therefore, much more UV radiation reaches the eyes than without sunglasses.
