Should a baby wear sunglasses? The eyes of babies and children must be especially carefully protected from harmful sun radiation on hot, sunny summer days because their protective ability is low: a child’s pupil is wide, the lens crystal clear, and they also look up more than adults. Children are at greater risk of developing eye damage from excessive sun radiation.
Do regular dark lenses also protect babies’ eyes? It is not the dark lens that protects the eyes from sun radiation, but the UV protection. Wearing glasses with UV-untreated, simply dark-tinted lenses is extremely dangerous for the eyes because the eye’s natural protective functions: squinting and pupil constriction do not activate with a dark lens. Therefore, much more UV radiation reaches the eye than without sunglasses.
