Should babies wear sunglasses?
Babies’ and children’s eyes must be especially carefully protected from harmful sun exposure during hot, sunny summer days, as their eye defense mechanisms are not developed: the child’s pupil is wide, the lens is crystal clear, and they look up more often than adults. Children are at greater risk of eye damage caused by excessive sun exposure.
Do regular dark sunglass lenses also protect babies’ eyes?
It is not the dark lens that protects the eyes from sunlight, but the UV protection. Wearing sunglasses with only tinted lenses and no UV protection is extremely dangerous to the eyes, because the eyes’ natural defense mechanisms — squinting and pupil contraction — do not work with dark lenses. This allows significantly more UV rays to reach the eye compared to not wearing sunglasses at all.
