Should children wear sunglasses?
The eyes of babies and children must be especially well protected from harmful solar radiation on hot sunny summer days, as their protective ability is low: a child’s eye pupil is wide, the lens is crystal clear and besides, kids look upwards more frequently than adults. Children are at a higher risk of developing eye damage due to excessive solar radiation.
Do regular dark lenses also protect babies’ eyes?
The eyes are not protected from solar radiation by dark lenses, but by UV protection. Wearing glasses with simply darkened lenses without UV protection is extremely dangerous to the eyes because the eye’s natural protection functions: squinting and pupil contraction, do not activate with dark lenses. Hence, much more UV radiation enters the eye than when not wearing sunglasses.
