Should children and babies wear sunglasses? Babies’ and children’s eyes must be especially carefully protected from harmful sun rays on hot, sunny summer days, as their eyes’ protective ability is low: a child’s pupil is wide, the lens is perfectly clear, and additionally they look upward more than adults. Children are at greater risk of eye damage caused by excessive sun exposure.
Do regular dark-tinted lenses also protect children’s and babies’ eyes? Eyes are protected from sun rays not by the dark tint, but by UV protection. Wearing sunglasses with simply dark-tinted lenses without UV protection is extremely dangerous for the eyes, as the eye’s natural protective functions—squinting and pupil constriction—do not activate with a dark lens. As a result, much more UV radiation enters the eye than if not wearing any sunglasses at all.
