Should children and babies wear sunglasses? Babies’ and children’s eyes need to be especially protected from harmful sun rays on hot, sunny summer days, as their eyes’ defense ability is low: a child’s pupil is wider, the lens is crystal clear, and additionally they tend to look upwards more than adults. Children face a higher risk of sun-induced eye damage.
Do ordinary dark lenses also protect children’s and babies’ eyes? It is not the darkness of the lens, but UV protection that shields the eyes from sun rays. Wearing glasses with simply tinted lenses but without UV protection is extremely dangerous, as the eye’s natural defense mechanisms—squinting and pupil constriction—do not activate behind a dark lens. Therefore, significantly more UV radiation reaches the eye than without sunglasses.
