Should a baby wear sunglasses? Babies’ and children’s eyes must be especially protected from harmful sunlight on hot, sunny summer days because their eye protection capability is low: the child’s eye pupil is wide, the lens is crystal clear, and moreover, children tend to look up more than adults. Children are at greater risk of eye damage caused by excessive sunlight exposure.
Does ordinary dark glass also protect babies’ eyes? Eye protection from sunlight is not provided by dark glass, but by UV protection. Wearing glasses with darkly tinted but UV-untreated lenses is extremely dangerous for the eyes because the eye’s natural protective functions – squinting and pupil constriction – do not work with dark glass. For this reason, the eyes are exposed to much more UV radiation than if no sunglasses were worn at all.
