Should a baby wear sunglasses? The eyes of babies and children need to be especially protected from harmful sun radiation on hot and sunny summer days because their eyes have a low level of protection: a child’s pupil is wide, the lens is crystal clear, and moreover, they look upwards more than adults. Children are at a higher risk of developing eye damage caused by excessive sun exposure.
Do regular dark lenses also protect babies’ eyes? Eyes are not protected against sun radiation by dark lenses, but by UV protection. Wearing glasses with lenses that are merely darkened and lack UV protection is extremely dangerous for the eyes because the eye’s natural protective functions: squinting and pupil constriction, do not activate with dark lenses. As a result, much more UV radiation reaches the eye than without wearing sunglasses.
