Should babies wear sunglasses?
It is important to protect babies’ and children’s eyes especially carefully from harmful sunlight on hot, sunny summer days, as their natural protection is low: children’s pupils are wide, their lenses are crystal clear, and they tend to look upward more often than adults. Children are at higher risk of sun-induced eye damage.
Do ordinary dark lenses offer the same protection for babies’ eyes?
It is not the dark tint but UV protection that shields the eyes from sunlight. Wearing sunglasses with dark but non-UV-protected lenses is extremely dangerous for the eyes, as the natural defense mechanisms—squinting and pupil contraction—do not activate with dark lenses. As a result, more UV rays reach the eyes than if no sunglasses are worn at all.
