Should a baby wear sunglasses?
Babies’ and children’s eyes need to be especially well protected from harmful sun exposure on hot, sunny summer days since their eyes are more vulnerable: a child’s pupil is wide, the lens is crystal clear, and they often look upwards more than adults. Children are at greater risk of eye damage from excessive sun exposure.
Do regular dark lenses also protect babies’ eyes?
It’s not the darkness of the lens that protects the eye from sun exposure, but the UV protection. Wearing sunglasses with simply dyed, dark lenses and no UV protection is extremely dangerous, as the eye’s natural protective functions—squinting and pupil constriction—do not activate with a darkened lens. Thus, more UV rays enter the eye than if no sunglasses were worn.
