Should children and babies wear sunglasses? Babies’ and children’s eyes must be especially well protected from harmful sunlight on hot, sunny summer days, as their eyes have low natural protection: a child’s pupil is wide, the lens is crystal clear, and they also tend to look upwards more than adults. Children are at a higher risk of sun-induced eye damage.
Do regular dark glasses also protect children’s and babies’ eyes? Eye protection from sunlight is not provided by dark lenses but by UV protection. Wearing sunglasses with dark-tinted lenses but no UV protection is extremely dangerous, as the eye’s natural protective mechanisms—squinting and pupil contraction—do not work with dark lenses. As a result, much more UV radiation reaches the eye than without sunglasses.
